Galatasaray has been dealt a significant setback as Hakim Ziyech, the Moroccan winger, faces an extended period of unavailability after sustaining an ankle injury during the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. The 30-year-old arrived at Galatasaray injured following his national team duties and underwent thorough medical examinations, revealing a more severe prognosis than initially anticipated.
Ziyech’s struggles with injuries have been a recurring theme throughout the current season, despite moments of commendable performance.
Representing Morocco at AFCON 2023, the winger encountered a setback during the group stage clash against Zambia, resulting in an ankle injury that sidelined him for the subsequent round of 16 fixture against South Africa.
Upon his return to Galatasaray, Ziyech underwent medical assessments on Saturday, shedding light on the severity of his condition.
A press release from the Turkish club confirmed the diagnosis as an “ankle distortion (advanced sprain and rotation),” detailing additional complications such as stretching and tension of the internal and external lateral ligaments, as well as syndesmosis of the left ankle, accompanied by bone edema in the ankle bones.
The club has initiated the necessary treatment protocols.
The prognosis indicates a prolonged absence from the pitch for Ziyech, with an estimated recovery period of at least a month. Consequently, the Moroccan winger is expected to miss several upcoming matches, and, if Morocco had advanced, he would have been unavailable for the quarter-finals of AFCON 2023.
Ziyech is anticipated to make his return to competitive football in March 2024.
This season, Ziyech has showcased his prowess for Galatasaray, contributing 4 goals and 2 assists in 14 appearances, demonstrating his value despite the challenges posed by injuries.
The setback underscores the unpredictable nature of professional football and presents a considerable test for both the player and the club’s management as they navigate this period of unavailability.
