Gabon international Denis Bouanga fires LAFC into Club World Cup after dramatic victory over Club América
Denis Bouanga booked LAFC’s ticket to the Club World Cup with a dramatic extra-time winner in a tense one-off playoff match against Club América.
The Gabon international struck in the 115th minute to seal a 2-1 win for the Major League Soccer side, ensuring their participation in next month’s global tournament.
The decisive fixture, held on U.S. soil, determined the final club to join the prestigious competition after Club León was disqualified.
Club América had looked poised to claim the spot after taking the lead in the 64th minute through Brian Rodriguez.
The Mexican side controlled large portions of the match and appeared on course to hold onto their narrow advantage.
But LAFC’s persistence paid off in the dying moments of regular time.
Brazilian forward Igor Jesus pounced to level the score, forcing the game into extra time and giving the home fans renewed hope.
As fatigue set in on both sides, it was Bouanga who delivered the moment of brilliance.
With just five minutes left in extra time, the forward broke through the defence and slotted home the winner, sending LAFC into the Club World Cup for the first time in their history.
The goal capped a tireless performance from the 29-year-old, who has consistently delivered for LAFC since joining the club.
His latest contribution not only secured a milestone victory but also handed LAFC a place on the world stage, where they will face elite opposition.
The Californian club is now set to meet Chelsea on June 16 in their Club World Cup opener.
