Didier Six Eyes Long-Term Project with Mauritius After Draw Against Burundi
Didier Six’s tenure as head coach of Mauritius got off to a promising start on Wednesday, as the island nation earned a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Burundi. In what was his first official match in charge, the former France international expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, while stressing that success will require patience.
“We are laying the foundations for a new team,” said Six after the game. “We will not see the results in a few days.” The Frenchman, appointed earlier this year, has made it clear that his vision for Mauritius extends well beyond short-term gains, aiming instead to establish a competitive side on the African continent.
Mauritius took the lead twice in the match against the Swallows of Burundi, showing encouraging signs in attack, but defensive lapses allowed the visitors to respond on both occasions. Nevertheless, Six highlighted the determination and cohesion within his squad, suggesting the draw was a positive step forward.
His next test comes on Saturday against familiar opponents: Togo. The Hawks, ranked 64th by FIFA, are expected to pose a more formidable challenge. However, Six, who famously led Togo to the second round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, believes his knowledge of the West African side could prove useful.
“I know the Togolese a little better,” he said. “But above all, they are 64th in the FIFA rankings. It will be something else.”
Mauritius’ encounter with Togo forms part of their preparations for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Six using these friendlies to assess new talent and begin shaping a more competitive squad.
While expectations remain tempered, there is cautious optimism on the island that Didier Six, with his experience and ambition, can spark a new era in Mauritian football.
