Michael Olise matches historic Bayern Munich feat with stunning Bundesliga run

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has drawn a striking parallel between Michael Olise and Napoli star Kevin De Bruyne, saying he sees “total calm” in the young winger.

Kompany, who played with De Bruyne during their time together at Manchester City, suggested Olise’s qualities bear a strong resemblance to the Belgian playmaker’s development.

Olise, who was born in France to a Nigerian father, shares African roots with Kompany, whose father is Congolese.

The praise comes at a time when De Bruyne has already made a dazzling start to life in Italy, scoring a free kick on his Napoli debut in a 2-0 victory over Sassuolo.

Olise, meanwhile, has enjoyed an outstanding year in Bavaria, scoring 17 goals and contributing 21 assists across competitions last season.

His impact has continued in 2025 with three goals and two assists at the Club World Cup and a brace against RB Leipzig on the opening Bundesliga weekend.

Speaking ahead of Bayern’s DFB-Pokal tie with Wehen Wiesbaden, Kompany made clear that Olise’s statistical output is not his main concern, instead highlighting the winger’s mentality and poise.

“Michael’s numbers aren’t my priority. But I do expect him to get better and make strides. I’ve also seen the development of such talents as a player, perhaps comparable to Kevin De Bruyne.

“What’s important is what they do every day in training. I see total calm in him. Now he’s won something, but that’s in the past.”

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund, sitting alongside Kompany, declined to discuss reports of a release clause in Olise’s contract, insisting instead that the 22-year-old is viewed as a cornerstone for the club’s long-term future.

“Our aim is that Michael will stay at FC Bayern for a long time. He’s an exceptional talent.”
