French-Guinean star Paul Pogba says ‘I must learn from Minamino’ as he begins AS Monaco comeback
French midfielder Paul Pogba has praised Takumi Minamino’s work ethic and mentality as he begins life at AS Monaco following a turbulent spell away from competitive football.
The 32-year-old, who was handed a four-year doping ban in February 2024, signed for Monaco in the summer in a bid to revive his career and has been gradually reintegrating into full training with his new teammates, including the former Liverpool playmaker.
Born in Lagny-sur-Marne to Guinean parents, Pogba is widely regarded as one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation but has endured a difficult few years plagued by injuries, controversy and inconsistent form.
His move to Monaco represents a fresh start in Ligue 1 and a chance to return to the standards he once set at Juventus and with the French national team.
Speaking to Sportiva, Pogba singled out Minamino as an example to follow within the Monaco squad.
“Takumi is always the first one to arrive at training and the last to leave. I’ve never seen a player so disciplined yet enjoying football so much at the same time,” he said.
“That’s something I need to learn from him. When you watch him play, you can clearly see he’s always thinking on the pitch. He’s incredibly smart, and his movement shows just how deeply he understands the game.”
Minamino, who joined Monaco from Liverpool for an initial £12.9 million in June 2022, has made 105 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists.
Pogba’s arrival is expected to bolster the Principality club’s midfield options, and alongside Minamino he could form a pivotal partnership as Monaco aim to challenge for honours in Ligue 1 and in Europe this season.
