Mahdi Camara has completed a surprise move to Stade Rennais, turning down a previously agreed deal with OGC Nice at the final stage of negotiations.
The 27-year-old midfielder, who impressed last season with Stade Brestois by making 47 appearances and scoring six goals, had reportedly given his approval to join Nice earlier in the window.
However, in a late change of direction, the Gambian-born player opted to sign with Rennes instead.
According to L’Équipe, Camara has agreed a four-year contract with the Breton side, with the transfer fee believed to be in the region of €8m.
The move is expected to be formally announced in the coming days.
Camara’s decision marks a significant coup for Rennes, who have been active in strengthening their squad ahead of the new season.
His ability to operate both as a defensive midfielder and in a box-to-box role made him a standout performer for Brest, attracting interest from several Ligue 1 clubs.
During the 2023–24 campaign, his consistency and work rate were key to Brest’s impressive performances.
Camara’s knack for breaking up opposition play, combined with his goal-scoring contribution from midfield, earned him a reputation as one of the most reliable players in the French top flight.
For Rennes, securing Camara’s signature adds depth and versatility to their midfield, providing competition for places and additional tactical options for the coaching staff.
His arrival aligns with the club’s ambitions to challenge for European qualification spots while maintaining a strong domestic campaign.
For Nice, the late collapse of the deal will come as a major setback, with the Aiglons having considered Camara a priority signing to bolster their midfield options.
The reasons behind his change of heart have not been officially disclosed, but Rennes’ project and the prospect of playing a central role in their plans are believed to have been decisive factors.
Camara’s journey from Brest to Rennes continues his steady rise in French football, having previously developed through the Saint-Étienne system before establishing himself as a top-tier midfielder.
Now, with a new chapter ahead in Brittany, he will be looking to make an immediate impact in his debut season at Roazhon Park.
The deal not only reshapes Rennes’ midfield for the coming campaign but also adds intrigue to the Ligue 1 season, with Camara set to face the club he almost joined when Rennes meet Nice later in the year.
