French-Cameroonian William Saliba to miss Brentford game after manager Arteta calls injury 'very bizarre'

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described William Saliba’s latest injury as ‘very bizarre’ ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Brentford, raising fresh concerns over their title challenge.

The Premier League leaders are already reeling from a 1-1 draw at 10-man Chelsea, which allowed Manchester City to close the gap at the top.

Saliba, who has Cameroonian heritage, could miss the game at Brentford after sustaining an ankle problem that Arteta says will take a few days to heal.

His absence would come on top of Gabriel’s thigh issue, leaving Arsenal’s defence further weakened at a critical stage in their pursuit of a first league title in over 20 years.

Speaking in his press conference, Arteta elaborated on Saliba’s situation. “I am not going to be able to help you much today. We have another training session later today.

“He had a little niggle. I think it is going to be a matter of days,” he said. He added that the injury was “very bizarre,” comparing it to an earlier ankle problem that forced Saliba out against Liverpool.

The Gunners now face the prospect of reduced defensive options as they travel to Brentford, a team that has proven difficult to beat this season.

With Manchester City scheduled to play Fulham on Tuesday, Arsenal must secure maximum points to maintain their slender lead at the summit.

Saliba’s absence would compound a growing list of injury concerns for Arteta, who has already been without key defenders at crucial moments this campaign.

His calm and composed performances have been vital to Arsenal’s resurgence, and losing him could leave the backline vulnerable against Brentford’s pace and creativity.
