French-Cameroonian Kylian Mbappé hails Ronaldo as ‘an example’ but vows to build his own Real Madrid legacy

Kylian Mbappé has opened up about his ongoing relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the Portuguese icon as “an example” and “the biggest reference” for players aspiring to greatness.

The Real Madrid forward said he continues to draw inspiration and guidance from Ronaldo, whom he still considers the ultimate benchmark for excellence both at the club and in football as a whole.

Born to a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, Mbappé has often spoken about how Ronaldo influenced his career.

Now wearing the famous white shirt of Real Madrid, the 26-year-old French-Cameroonian forward has followed in the footsteps of the man he idolised as a child, yet insists he is determined to forge his own identity at the Spanish giants.

Speaking to Universo Valdano, Mbappé revealed the depth of his connection with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Cristiano has always been a role model, an example for me,” he said. “I’m lucky to be able to talk to him. He gives me advice, helps me… He’s the number one, the biggest reference at Real Madrid. People, even now, still dream of Cristiano.”

The French captain admitted that the advice he receives from Ronaldo has been invaluable in helping him navigate life as one of football’s most scrutinised figures.

Their conversations, he explained, are often centered around mindset, discipline, and maintaining consistency at the elite level.

“He’s the best, but I want to forge my own path,” Mbappé said. “And it will be historic for me and for Real Madrid. I want to do something historic with Real Madrid.”

Mbappé’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu in 2024 marked the culmination of years of speculation and transfer drama.

Since then, he has quickly established himself as the focal point of Real Madrid’s attack, drawing comparisons to Ronaldo’s early years in Spain.
