French-Cameroonian Hugo Ekitike eyes even higher standards after Liverpool masterclass

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike delivered a standout performance in the 5-2 thrashing of West Ham on Saturday, yet the 23-year-old is already setting his sights higher.

The French forward not only opened the scoring but also created opportunities for Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo, earning man of the match honors. Despite the plaudits, Ekitike remains unsatisfied with his own display, insisting there is still room for improvement.

Ekitike, who also carries Cameroonian heritage, is no stranger to balancing personal ambition with team contribution.

“To be honest, I could have scored more goals. I’m not completely satisfied,” he told Liverpool’s official site. “But it’s not just about scoring goals, but also about contributing with assists. Today I was responsible for one or two. As long as I help the team and am involved, that’s the most important thing. I want to win, so in that way I’m happy. Now I’m looking forward to the upcoming matches.”

The striker’s self-criticism comes after a four-game goal drought prior to the West Ham fixture, a period he admits weighed on him. “Of course I can get better. I could have scored goals in the last few games too, I had good chances. So I have to keep working,” he said.

Nevertheless, Ekitike’s impact this season has been significant. He has already netted 16 goals in his first campaign at Anfield, quickly establishing himself as a Premier League force. Yet, even amid these milestones, his focus remains firmly forward-looking.

“I want to be the best version of myself to help the team even more, because I know I can contribute more. It’s always about learning and getting better. In the upcoming matches I will try to be even better, score more goals and be more involved,” he emphasized.
