French-Cameroonian defender William Saliba in fresh Arsenal contract talks amid Real Madrid interest

Arsenal have initiated discussions with William Saliba over a new contract as they move to secure the highly rated defender’s long-term future amid intensifying interest from Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old centre-back, a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s defence, is into the final two years of his current deal and the North London club are determined to avoid losing one of their most valuable assets.

Saliba, who was born in France but of Cameroonian heritage, has long been viewed as one of Europe’s most promising defenders.

The former Saint-Étienne player joined Arsenal in 2019 but has become indispensable only in the past two seasons after successful loan spells and steady integration into Arteta’s set-up.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Real Madrid are closely monitoring Saliba’s situation as they continue to strengthen their defensive options.

The Spanish giants view him as a long-term successor to their ageing back line and are poised to act should contract negotiations at Arsenal stall.

The same report states that Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta has identified a Saliba extension as a priority following the closure of the summer transfer window.

While talks are said to be underway, there is no agreement yet and progress is expected to be gradual.

Saliba’s influence on the pitch has been a major factor in Arsenal’s title challenges over the past two campaigns.
