Neil El Aynaoui has indicated his willingness to represent Morocco at senior international level, following a strong display in a recent friendly match and a high-profile summer move to AS Roma.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who joined the Serie A club from RC Lens for €25 million, appears to be positioning himself for a potential call-up to the Moroccan national team.

Having previously featured for the country’s U23 side, El Aynaoui has now made his most open declaration yet about joining the senior ranks of the Atlas Lions.

Speaking after a pre-season encounter against his former team, the Franco-Moroccan did not shy away when asked about his international future. “Yes, of course,” he responded.

“I work hard at the club. I had the opportunity to play with Morocco’s youth sides… I’m focused on my performances in Rome, and the rest will follow.”

El Aynaoui’s comments come at a time when Moroccan fans have been increasingly vocal in their desire to see him wear the senior national team shirt.

Although he has long been on the radar of coach Walid Regragui, the midfielder has yet to make his debut with the senior squad. Injuries, including one sustained last June, have delayed his progress on the international stage.

With Morocco set to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, interest in El Aynaoui’s inclusion has intensified. His move to Roma is seen as a major step in his development, and strong performances in Serie A could further bolster his case for selection.

His versatility and composure in midfield have made him one of the country’s most promising prospects.

In March, Regragui had publicly urged El Aynaoui to clarify his international intentions, stating that the door remained open but that a decision needed to be made.

Now, the midfielder’s recent statement appears to be the clearest signal yet that he is ready to commit to Morocco’s national team project.

El Aynaoui’s emergence as a top-level player began at Lens, where he steadily rose through the ranks to become a key figure in midfield. His technical ability, intelligence on the ball, and tactical discipline attracted the attention of several European clubs before Roma secured his signature this summer.

Moroccan supporters have high hopes for the 2025 AFCON, and the addition of El Aynaoui to the squad could provide a further boost to an already talented group. While the final decision rests with Regragui, the signs now suggest that a senior debut could be imminent.

As the new Serie A season approaches, El Aynaoui’s focus remains on adapting to life at Roma and proving his value in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

But with the national team call-up now firmly within reach, the midfielder’s next chapter may soon extend beyond club football and into the heart of Morocco’s footballing ambitions.
