Jordan Amavi Called Up to France U21 Squad, Dismisses Togolese Links with a Smile
Jordan Amavi, the promising left-back from OGC Nice, has been called up to the France U21 squad (Les Bleuets) by coach Pierre Mankowski for the upcoming friendlies against Italy (this Thursday) and England (November 17). He replaces Layvin Kurzawa, who was promoted to the senior team following Benoît Trémoulinas’ injury withdrawal.
Amavi has impressed this season with his consistent performances in Ligue 1, making the left flank at Nice his own. His solid defensive work and attacking contributions have not gone unnoticed by the national team selectors.
🗣️ Amavi: “I’m Not Togolese at All!”
Interestingly, the call-up comes amid confusion about his heritage. Some Togolese media outlets had claimed that Amavi was of Togolese descent—claims the player has humorously denied:
“I’m not Togolese at all! There are media outlets there that talk about me, even Serge Gakpé asked me if I have Togolese origins… I looked it up, that’s not the case!”
He added, laughing:
“Every time my friends read an article presenting me as Franco-Togolese, they send me a screenshot!”
Despite the surname “Amavi” sounding typical of Togolese origin, the defender has clarified that his roots lie elsewhere, and for now, his focus remains firmly on continuing his development with France’s national youth teams.
