Tensions Flare Between Romao and Gomis After Marseille-Lyon Clash
The Marseille-Lyon match on Sunday (4-2) was not only heated on the pitch but also sparked a war of words between Alaixys Romao and Bafétimbi Gomis, leading to a tense exchange between the two players after the final whistle.
Lyon’s striker, Gomis, later took to Twitter to reveal that Romao had insulted him during the match, accusing the Marseille midfielder of using inappropriate and immature language. Gomis specifically cited Romao’s comment about Canal+ journalist Pierre Ménès, which he found unacceptable. “I remain surprised by Romao’s unacceptable and immature attitude, who displayed vulgarity towards Pierre Ménès and me,” Gomis wrote. “Finding nothing else to say after making a mistake, he insulted me, saying: ‘Go on… that fat Pierre Ménès.’ Unacceptable.”
Gomis expressed regret for his outburst during the match, apologizing to viewers who may have seen him lose control. However, he emphasized that he needed an explanation for what he considered a lack of respect and maturity, something Romao apparently failed to provide. “I apologize to the viewers who saw me out of my mind, but I needed an explanation for this lack of respect and maturity. Something that, as you can imagine, he was unable to give me,” Gomis continued. “Behavior and comments that should be condemned on the football pitch.”
Pierre Ménès, who was informed of Romao’s comments, did not hesitate to respond, taking to social media to express his disapproval. “So Romao has an intellectual level equivalent to his level of play. Stupid and mean. No interest,” Ménès tweeted. “For those who don’t understand that I’m talking about Romao, go read the tweets of @BafGomis.”
The incident highlights the growing tensions both on and off the pitch as the competitive nature of French football continues to ignite strong emotions among players and pundits alike.
