In a significant development for African football, president of Morocco’s Football Federation Fouzi Lekjaa has been elected to the FIFA Council.
The election took place on March 12, 2025, during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo, where Lekjaa emerged successful among ten candidates vying for five seats.
As president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) since 2014, Lekjaa has been instrumental in elevating Morocco’s footballing stature. Under his leadership, Morocco secured the rights to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, marking the first time the tournament will be held across two continents. This achievement not only showcases his diplomatic acumen but also reflects Morocco’s commitment to the sport.
Lekjaa’s tenure has also seen Morocco’s national team reach unprecedented heights, notably their historic semi-final run in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This success has further solidified Morocco’s position on the global football stage.
His election to the FIFA Council is expected to amplify Africa’s voice in global football governance, paving the way for increased investment in infrastructure, youth development, and continental competitions. With Lekjaa’s strategic vision and proven track record, African football is poised for a transformative era on the world stage.
