Fouzi Lekjaa holds meeting with Walid Regragui ahead of Morocco’s upcoming games
Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) President Fouzi Lekjaa met with Atlas Lions head coach Walid Regragui at the Mohammed VI Complex to review Morocco’s performance in the last two World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Zambia and to chart the team’s next steps.
Morocco secured their place in the 2026 World Cup with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Niger last Friday, capping off a successful qualification campaign.
According to local media reports, the meeting also addressed logistical decisions, including the venue for Morocco’s final World Cup qualifier against Congo next month and the opponent for an upcoming friendly match.
A company involved in organising the fixtures has proposed a friendly against Brazil, awaiting confirmation.
This would mark a rematch of the March 2023 encounter in Tangier, where Morocco secured a 2-1 victory over the South Americans.
However, Regragui has expressed a preference for African opponents, a stance he demonstrated last month by declining a friendly in Sweden.
The Moroccan coach also turned down official requests to face Japan and South Korea in Tokyo and Seoul, citing the strain of long-distance travel.
The discussions between Lekjaa and Regragui are expected to provide clarity on Morocco’s schedule as the team prepares for the final qualifier in October and forthcoming international friendlies.
