Former Morocco defender Issam El Adoua begins coaching career with Al Ettifaq in UAE

Former Moroccan international Issam El Adoua has officially taken the first step into his coaching career after joining Emirati club Al Ettifaq’s technical staff as an assistant coach.

The ex-defender has transitioned from the pitch to the dugout following an impressive playing career that saw him represent several clubs across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

El Adoua’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the former Morocco international, who gained valuable experience during a career spanning more than a decade at both domestic and international levels.

The Moroccan began his professional journey with Wydad Casablanca, where he developed his qualities as a strong and composed defender before earning opportunities to compete abroad.

His performances at club level opened the door to European football, with El Adoua moving to France, where he featured for Ligue 1 side Lens and later Nantes. He continued his career in Spain with Levante before experiencing Portuguese football with Vitória Guimarães and Deportivo Aves.

The defender later expanded his football journey beyond Europe, joining Chinese club Chengdu before moving to the Gulf region, where he played for Kuwaiti sides Al-Qadsia and Kuwait SC.

His final playing chapter came in the United Arab Emirates with Al-Dhafra, where he ended his professional career at the conclusion of the 2022/2023 season.

Throughout his career, El Adoua was recognized for his defensive discipline, leadership qualities and ability to adapt to different football cultures. His international experience with Morocco also contributed to his reputation as a player with a strong understanding of the demands of the game at the highest level.

Following his retirement, the former centre-back quickly turned his attention towards coaching and began preparing for life on the technical side of football.

As part of his transition into management, El Adoua obtained the AFC A coaching licence accredited by the Asian Football Confederation, a qualification that allows him to further develop his tactical knowledge and pursue a career in coaching.

His new role with Al-Ettifaq will provide him with an opportunity to apply the lessons learned throughout his playing career while working alongside experienced coaches and helping develop players within the club’s structure.

The move is also part of a growing trend of former professional players moving into coaching roles, using their years of experience and understanding of the game to guide the next generation of footballers.

For El Adoua, the journey that began at Wydad Casablanca and took him across multiple continents now enters a new phase as he looks to make his mark from the technical area rather than on the field.
