Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Ethan Brooks makes Durban City debut in goalless draw

Durban City and Stellenbosch FC played out a goalless draw at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday night, with former Kaizer Chiefs defender Ethan Brooks making his debut for the home side after coming on in the second half.

The Betway Premiership match ended 0-0 despite both teams creating opportunities, although neither goalkeeper was seriously tested for sustained periods.

Durban City coach Khalil Ben Youseff selected an attacking starting line-up, with Haashim Domingo, Samkelo Maseko, Gaston Sirino and Jean Lwamba all included from the opening whistle. Stellenbosch FC manager Gavin Hunt also made changes, handing Bradley Grobler and Given Msimango their first starts of the campaign.

Buoyed by their first victory of the season the previous weekend, City began with greater intent and enjoyed most of the early possession. Their pressure almost produced the opening goal after 13 minutes, but Domingo was unable to hit the target from close range.

Stellenbosch were content to let the hosts control the ball and looked to threaten from set-pieces and other dead-ball situations. Their best opening of the first half fell to George Matlou, who found himself in a promising position inside the penalty area but fired over the crossbar.

The chances then dried up as the opening 45 minutes progressed. Both sides struggled to create clear opportunities, and the two goalkeepers reached the interval without being seriously troubled.

Ben Youseff acted early in the second half, making a double substitution. Luphumlo Sifumba and new signing Brooks were introduced, while Maseko and Domingo moved to the bench with about 30 minutes remaining.

Hunt responded by sending on record-breaker Quwan Plaatjies for Grobler as Stellenbosch looked to add more pace and energy to their attack. The change nearly had an immediate impact, with Plaatjies forcing City goalkeeper Fredrick Asare into a save with a powerful effort.

The match opened up during the closing stages as both teams pushed for a winning goal. City came close when Lwamba shot wide from a good position inside the penalty area.

Stellenbosch had an opportunity of their own when Sinoxolo Kwayiba found space, but Asare kept out the attempt. Neither side could find the decisive touch, leaving the points to be shared.

Durban City’s next three league fixtures are away matches against Orlando Pirates and Milford FC, followed by a home game against AmaZulu FC.

Stellenbosch FC will host Sekhukhune United in their next league fixture before travelling to face Kruger United.
