Arsenal title winner Alan Smith believes Noni Madueke will prove a smart addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad despite backlash from some fans following the winger’s move from Chelsea.
Madueke, who is of Nigerian descent, has faced criticism since his £52 million switch to the Emirates.
The signing has drawn surprise and even disbelief from some former Arsenal players, including Paul Merson, who described the move as “flabbergasting.”
However, Smith has come to Arteta’s defence and backed the 22-year-old to flourish under his guidance.
Speaking to Tribalfootball.com, Smith acknowledged the transfer was unexpected but praised Madueke’s potential and versatility.
“He can play both flanks, so that’s a great option to give Saka a rest at times, to offer an option to Martinelli, who’s been a bit up and down,” Smith noted.
The former striker also pointed to Arteta’s track record of improving players and said fans need to place trust in the club’s recruitment decisions.
“You’ve got to trust in your club and the experts… They’re not just picking somebody out of a hat,” he said, dismissing the reaction on social media as overblown.
Madueke has Premier League experience and was one of Chelsea’s bright spots in a turbulent season.
Smith remains confident the winger’s age, talent, and exposure at the top level will serve Arsenal well as they continue to build a title-challenging side.
