Former Algerian star Rafik Saïfi reveals near moves to Newcastle and Marseille

Former Algeria international Rafik Saïfi has disclosed that he came close to signing for Newcastle United and Olympique de Marseille during his playing career but missed out due to unforeseen circumstances.

In an interview with BeIN Sports, the ex-MC Alger playmaker shared insights into his European journey, highlighting pivotal moments that shaped his professional path.

Saïfi, who moved to ESTAC Troyes in 1999 after winning the Algerian championship, quickly adapted to French football.

Despite experiencing relegation with Troyes in the 2002-2003 season, he remained a key figure at the club. However, the summer of 2004 nearly took his career in a different direction.

“I was supposed to sign for Newcastle. I was set to travel to London to finalize the transfer, but it fell through because of a coaching change,” Saïfi revealed. Instead, he ended up joining FC Istres in Ligue 1.

A Career Transformed Under Gourcuff

Following his stint at Istres, Saïfi moved to AC Ajaccio but suffered a serious injury that hampered his progress.

His career took a significant turn when he signed for FC Lorient, where he flourished under coach Christian Gourcuff.

“He changed my career, particularly by shifting my position,” Saïfi explained. Playing as a second striker, he enjoyed a prolific 2007-2008 campaign, scoring 14 goals.

Despite attracting interest from other clubs, the former Algerian star opted to stay in Brittany, where he cemented his reputation as a key player in French football.
