Lens coach reconsiders Abdallah Sima role after late change in French Cup tie

A late injury to a key forward forced a sudden change in the starting line-up for RC Lens, and the unexpected opportunity allowed Senegal striker Abdallah Sima to deliver a performance that has prompted his coach to reassess earlier decisions about the player’s role.

The incident occurred shortly before the French Cup quarter-final between Lens and Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday, 5 March 2026 at Groupama Stadium.

Just minutes before kick-off, Lens forward Wesley Saïd was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury during the warm-up.

Saïd had been expected to lead the attack, having scored 10 league goals this season. His sudden absence left the coaching staff scrambling for an alternative, with head coach Pierre Sage turning to Sima as a late replacement.

The decision proved significant. Given a rare start, the 24-year-old striker took advantage of the opportunity and scored just before half-time to put Lens two goals ahead in the match.

Sima’s impact continued a productive run in the competition. Prior to the quarter-final, the Senegal international had already registered three goals and one assist in his previous two appearances in the tournament.

Following the match, Sage publicly admitted that the striker’s recent performances had made him rethink how often he had used him earlier in the season.

“It makes me question why I didn’t play him more,” the coach admitted, in comments reported by Wiw Sport.

Sage also praised the player’s attitude during periods when his involvement had been limited.

“He always approached things with enough professionalism and team spirit to keep working and make the most of the little, or even very little, playing time he had.”

Sima’s path to becoming an effective option for Lens has involved adapting his style of play.

The striker previously represented clubs such as Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., Rangers F.C. and Stade Brestois 29, experiences that shaped a game built around running into space behind defences.

At Lens, however, the tactical approach requires greater involvement in central play, a shift that demanded adjustments from the forward.

According to his coach, the player has managed to adapt without losing the qualities that define his game.

Further evidence of his growing influence arrived soon afterwards. Starting again in Lens’ league victory against FC Metz, a 3-0 win, Sima provided his first assist of the season in Ligue 1.

The performance reinforced the coach’s reassessment and underlined how quickly a last-minute change can reshape the hierarchy within a squad.
