Mohamed Aboutrika, the Egyptian midfielder, has confirmed his retirement from international football after Egypt’s 2-1 victory but subsequent elimination from the 2014 World Cup. Aboutrika had previously announced that he would retire at the end of the season, making the recent match his last appearance for Egypt.
While he bids farewell to the national team, Aboutrika is not finished with football altogether. The player, named the “Best African player playing on the continent” in 2012, plans to participate in one final competition: the Club World Cup in December. Al Ahly, the African champions, will face Guangzhou Evergrande of China in the tournament, providing Aboutrika with an opportunity to conclude his illustrious football career on a high note at the age of 35.
Aboutrika’s career includes winning three consecutive African Cup of Nations titles with Egypt in 2006, 2008, and 2010, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished players on the continent.
