Assane Diao’s cameo shows ‘what we’ve been missing’, says Fabregas
Como 1907 manager Cesc Fabregas says Assane Diao’s brief appearance in Saturday’s win over US Lecce highlighted what the side have lacked during his lengthy absence through injury.
Como secured a 3-1 victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a result that lifted them provisionally into fifth place in Serie A as they continue their push for European qualification.
Yet the scoreline was not the only significant development on the day.
Diao, sidelined for months, returned to competitive action for the first time in a long period. The home side had fallen behind early on before responding to take control of the contest prior to half-time.
With the outcome largely settled, Fabregas introduced the 20-year-old in the 84th minute.
The forward wasted little time in making an impression. Within two minutes of entering the field, he found himself with a clear opportunity on goal, only to be denied by Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.
Although his involvement was brief, Fabregas suggested it was enough to underline Diao’s value to the squad.
Speaking to DAZN, the former Arsenal FC midfielder said: “In five minutes, we saw what we’ve been missing for 11 months, and we hope to see him back in top form soon,” as reported by Wiw Sport.
Diao has not scored in an official match since April 2025, but his return is viewed internally as a timely boost ahead of the decisive phase of the campaign.
With Como competing near the top end of the table, the Senegalese striker is regarded as a genuine option as the club seek to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
For Fabregas and his side, the signs were brief but encouraging.
