In a remarkable debut, Yong Sport Academy from Bamenda clinched victory in its first Cameroon Cup final, defeating the formidable Canon of Yaoundé. The little-known team from the North-West region secured the win in a penalty shootout with a score of 4-1.
The regulation time ended with a goalless draw, and Yong Sport was not considered the favorite. However, the players, led by coach Emmanuel Doumbé Bosso, played with confidence against Canon, a club with an illustrious record in the country. Canon did not have an exceptional match, and their attack lacked realism at times. The unfortunate finalist faced additional challenges as they played with 10 players against 11 from the 52nd minute onwards, following the expulsion of Atangana Mvondo.
Yong Sport Academy owes much of its success to goalkeeper Nkesi Hosea. The captain made impressive saves and stopped a critical shot on goal. In recognition of his outstanding performance, the “specialist” in penalties was named the “man of the match.” The victory marks a historic achievement for Yong Sport Academy in their inaugural appearance in the Cameroon Cup final.
