Lydia Nsekera, an influential figure and one of the few women leading a national football federation worldwide, lost her position as the president of the Burundian Football Federation (FBF). She was replaced by Révérien Ndikuriyo, a former rebel fighter and president of a second division team. The elections, held behind closed doors, had political overtones, with Ndikuriyo gaining support and winning the presidency. Nsekera, who had been at the helm of the FBF since 2004, expressed concerns about political interference and ethnic issues in Burundian football during her farewell speech. She had been a trailblazer, becoming the first female member of FIFA’s executive committee in May 2012.
