Flick seeks calm after Yamal touchline outburst mars Atletico Madrid win
Lamine Yamal cut a visibly frustrated figure despite FC Barcelona securing a late 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid, prompting manager Hansi Flick to play down the incident and call for composure after the final whistle.
The teenage sensation was involved in a heated exchange with Flick moments after the match, overshadowing what should have been a morale-boosting result.
Yamal, who had been heavily involved throughout the contest, appeared agitated as he left the pitch and notably refrained from celebrating the decisive late strike from Robert Lewandowski in the 87th minute.
Efforts to calm the winger proved ineffective, with teammate Pau Cubarsí seen attempting to diffuse the situation without success.
The tension briefly escalated when Flick approached Yamal at full-time, only to be met with a reaction that appeared to catch the German coach off guard.
The situation continued to unfold as players made their way off the pitch, with Yamal still visibly animated during an exchange with goalkeeping coach José Ramón de la Fuente, who tried to guide him toward the dressing room.
Despite the public display of frustration, Flick struck a measured tone in his post-match remarks, suggesting the outburst stemmed from the player’s competitive drive rather than deeper issues.
“I think… I don’t know exactly what it is, but in the end, as I said before, there was a lot of emotion in the game. And I mean, Lamine tried everything to score the second goal.
“That’s perfect, that’s great. And of course, not everything was perfect, but he tried everything. When he gets the ball, he’s always available, and that’s a good thing. And for me, that’s how it is.”
The Barcelona coach further reinforced his view that Yamal’s reaction was rooted in ambition.
“He tried everything to score the second goal, and that’s fine. He tried everything. I think that’s why he was angry.”
