Cameroonian defender Flavien Boyomo has publicly backed Ademola Lookman to succeed Victor Osimhen as the 2024 CAF Player of the Year, praising his outstanding performances over the past year.
Osimhen, who claimed the prestigious title in 2023, is notably absent from this year’s nominations. Lookman, who has emerged as one of the most consistent and influential players in African football, is among the top contenders for the award, alongside Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi, and Ronwen Williams.
Lookman’s standout performances during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations cemented his place as one of the continent’s premier talents.
Scoring three goals and providing one assist in seven appearances, Lookman played a pivotal role in his team’s strong showing in the tournament.
His success continued in club football, where he made history by scoring a remarkable hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final for Atalanta, further enhancing his reputation on the European stage.
Boyomo, who spoke to Actu Cameroon, expressed his belief that Lookman has done enough to earn the coveted title.
“I believe Lookman will win the African Ballon d’Or,” Boyomo said. “He won the Europa League and he is the one who has the best chance of winning the trophy this year.”
While Lookman faces stiff competition from a talented group of nominees, Boyomo’s endorsement highlights the forward’s exceptional year.
The 27-year-old has not only proven himself on the international stage but has also consistently delivered for his club, making him a deserving contender for the prestigious individual award.
With Osimhen’s absence from this year’s list, Lookman is viewed by many, including Boyomo, as the frontrunner.
The winner of the CAF Player of the Year award will be announced later this year, with Lookman’s supporters hopeful that his performances will be recognized with the prestigious accolade.
