Five-cap South Africa goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver returns to professional football

Former South Africa goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver has resumed his professional career after joining Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers North West University for the 2026/27 campaign.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper made his first appearance for the club at the weekend, starting in North West University’s 1-1 draw with Upington City.

Vyver had been away from professional football since the 2022/23 season, when he helped Cape Town Spurs secure promotion to the Betway Premiership. His return gives him an opportunity to rebuild his career after a period disrupted by serious medical problems and difficulties regaining full fitness.

Vyver has won five caps for South Africa. He made his international debut during the 2021 COSAFA Cup, a tournament won by South Africa under coach Morena Ramoreboli.

The goalkeeper’s remaining four appearances for Bafana Bafana came during the 2022 COSAFA Cup and in the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying campaign.

His progress at club level was interrupted after Cape Town Spurs’ promotion campaign. Vyver required surgery after developing serious medical issues. Although the operation was successful, he found it difficult to return to full fitness and subsequently lost his place in the team.

Cape Town Spurs released him while Ernst Middendorp was in charge.

Vyver then spent a short period with FN Rangers in the ABC Motsepe League before returning to Cape Town Spurs last season. By that stage, Spurs were also competing in the ABC Motsepe League after being relegated from professional football.

The move to North West University represents another chance for Vyver to establish himself in the professional game. Despite his recent difficulties, he remains relatively young for a goalkeeper and already has more than 50 professional appearances to his name.

His experience at both club and international level will now be tested in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where North West University are competing after joining the division as newcomers.

Vyver’s immediate involvement in the starting line-up suggests he is already being given an opportunity to contribute as the 2026/27 campaign develops. His first match ended with a point against Upington City, with the two sides sharing four goals? Noboth teams scored once in the 1-1 draw.

The goalkeeper will hope the move can provide the consistency needed to revive a career that was progressing strongly before his medical setback.
