Zambian football is in mourning following the death of Fighton Simukonda, the coach of the nation’s U23 team. Simukonda, who recently led Zambia to the U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, passed away after a battle with illness. According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the diabetic coach had been hospitalized on December 12. Although he was discharged on January 29, he was readmitted a week later and unfortunately succumbed to his condition.

Fighton Simukonda’s contribution to Zambian football was immense, both as a player and as a coach. Between 1982 and 1988, he was a prominent figure with the Nkana Red Devils, where he enjoyed a successful career and became a respected champion in domestic competitions. His talent was also recognized at the international level; in 1984, Simukonda helped Zambia capture the CECAFA Cup in Kenya, adding a notable achievement to his playing career.

Transitioning into coaching, Simukonda dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of Zambian footballers. Over the past four years, he served as the head coach of Nchanga Rangers, one of Zambia’s prominent clubs, where he helped develop young talent and guided the team in domestic competitions. Simukonda also took on responsibilities with the national setup, acting as assistant coach to the senior Zambian team while simultaneously managing the U23 squad. His dual roles underscored his commitment to strengthening Zambian football at multiple levels, and his impact on young players was widely acknowledged.

Under his guidance, the U23 team reached the Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, demonstrating his ability to inspire and organize teams on the continental stage. His tactical knowledge, leadership, and dedication to player development made him a respected figure among players, colleagues, and football officials alike. Simukonda’s passing leaves a significant void in Zambian football, both for his achievements on the field and his mentorship off it.

The football community in Zambia and across Africa has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a true stalwart of the game. Beyond his titles and victories, Fighton Simukonda will be remembered for his passion for football, his commitment to nurturing young talent, and his unwavering dedication to Zambian football throughout his life.

In summary, the passing of Fighton Simukonda marks a sad chapter for Zambian football. A celebrated player, a skilled coach, and a mentor to many, his legacy will endure through the players he developed and the contributions he made to the sport in his country. The Confederation of African Football and the wider footballing community mourn the loss of a remarkable figure whose influence extended far beyond the pitch.
