FIFA sets new date for clubs to release players for AFCON 2025
FIFA has moved back the deadline for clubs to release players ahead of this winter’s Africa Cup of Nations, giving teams more time with their African internationals.
The original deadline required all eligible players to join their national squads by Monday, Dec. 8. Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed the date has now been shifted a week later, to Monday, Dec. 15.
AFCON 2025 will be staged in Morocco, with the 2022 World Cup semifinalists among the favourites.
The tournament begins with Morocco facing Comoros on Sunday, Dec. 21. All 24 participating nations are guaranteed at least three group-stage matches, which run until the end of December.
For Liverpool, the delay allows Mohamed Salah to feature in two more games before leaving for Egypt.
Previously, Salah would have been required to depart before next Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
The extra week ensures the Reds avoid a weakened squad, particularly given their two losses from five European fixtures so far this season.
Salah is also expected to be available for Liverpool’s home game against Brighton on Dec. 13.
Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers will likely face Liverpool without Salah, though the absence may not carry the same impact as in previous seasons. His availability for Liverpool’s New Year’s Day visit to Leeds remains uncertain.
Should Egypt reach the semifinals, Salah could miss as many as seven club matches, including a potential third-place playoff on Jan. 17, 2025.
The revised FIFA release date offers clubs some relief but also highlights the balancing act between domestic fixtures and international duty for top African players this season.
The adjustment ensures teams like Manchester United and Liverpool retain key stars longer while still complying with AFCON requirements, providing tactical and squad flexibility during a congested December schedule.
