FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulates Senegal for securing World Cup ticket

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has extended heartfelt congratulations to Senegal following their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, secured with a resounding 4-0 victory over Mauritania on Tuesday night in Diamniadio.

The Lions of Teranga delivered a commanding performance at the Stade de Abdoulaye Wade, with talisman Sadio Mane bagging a brace to inspire Pape Thiaw’s men to a convincing triumph.

The result confirmed Senegal’s place at next year’s global tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

In a congratulatory message, Infantino lauded Senegal’s sustained excellence and their invaluable contribution to the growth of African football on the global stage.

“You thrilled the world with your historic run to the quarter-finals in 2002 and your outstanding victories three years ago in Qatar,” Infantino remarked.

“Now you’re set for a third consecutive World Cup. Congratulations to you, Senegal, on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026.”

He further described Senegal as one of the most dynamic and talented sides in world football, emphasizing that the expanded 2026 tournament would not feel complete without them.

“The biggest and most exciting World Cup in history wouldn’t have been the same without one of Africa’s most gifted and entertaining teams,” he added.

Infantino concluded by wishing the Teranga Lions well ahead of the official draw on December 5 in Washington D.C. Senegal will now shift focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
