New development on racist incident during Spain vs Egypt friendly

FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Royal Spanish Football Federation following incidents that marred Spain’s recent friendly clash with the Egyptian national football team during the last international break.

The match itself ended in a goalless draw, but events in the stands overshadowed the result. Fans inside the stadium were reported to have booed during the Egyptian national anthem before chanting slogans deemed offensive to Islam.

The incidents prompted swift condemnation from Spanish authorities, including the government and the football federation.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente and teenage star Lamine Yamal were among the prominent figures who publicly denounced the behaviour.

Authorities have also stepped in, with Mossos d’Esquadra confirming that an investigation has been opened. The controversy has sparked strong reactions across both Egypt and Spain, as well as internationally.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, FIFA confirmed the next steps, stating: “FIFA has today initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation because of the events that took place in the friendly match against Egypt.”

Reports indicate that discriminatory chants, including “The Muslim who doesn’t jump,” were heard during the match, prompting global outrage and further scrutiny. The referee documented the incidents in the official match report, which led to the case being referred to FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

According to Spanish outlet AS, potential sanctions could range from financial penalties to mandatory anti-racism messaging at future matches. A stadium closure, however, is not currently expected.

FIFA, under the leadership of Gianni Infantino, has intensified efforts to combat racism in football. The governing body has taken a firm stance in recent cases, including its support for Vinícius Júnior in his ongoing battle against racial abuse in stadiums across Europe.
