FIFA has come under intense scrutiny after paying €3.57m in income tax on behalf of its president, Gianni Infantino, between 2024 and 2026.
The arrangement followed Infantino’s move from Switzerland to Miami, according to reports by the New York Times and Le Monde. The payments have triggered criticism because the benefit was agreed at a restricted meeting and was not recorded in any official FIFA document, documents reviewed by the New York Times reportedly show.
FIFA said in a statement that the arrangement complied with all of the organisation’s internal regulations and with the applicable laws. However, the decision to cover the president’s tax bill has continued to draw criticism.
The agreement is also sensitive because it is understood to have been initiated by Swiss lawyer Bruno Chiomento, who has been close to Gianni Infantino for two decades.
The controversy comes at a significant point in FIFA’s electoral calendar. The deadline for presidential candidates to submit their applications is 19 November this year.
