World Cup 2026: FIFA explains Swiss penalty controversy after Qatar draw
FIFA has issued an official clarification following controversy surrounding the penalty awarded to Switzerland during its 1-1 draw with Qatar in their opening Group B match at the 2026 World Cup.
The governing body said a temporary technical issue affected the display of the semi-automated offside technology graphics before the penalty decision was confirmed, prompting questions from viewers and observers during the match.
The incident occurred during the first half of the Group B encounter and centred on the action that led to Switzerland being awarded a penalty in the 14th minute.
According to FIFA, the problem was limited to the display of the offside lines and did not affect the operation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system itself.
The organisation stressed that the technical malfunction was quickly resolved and had no impact on the review process.
FIFA addresses concerns over offside technology
In its statement, FIFA explained that the semi-automated offside detection system experienced a temporary issue that prevented the visual offside lines from being displayed before the penalty decision was validated.
The absence of the graphics led to questions regarding whether the incident had been fully reviewed and whether a potential offside offence had been missed during the build-up to the penalty.
However, FIFA stated that the review process continued to function normally despite the display problem.
The organisation added that officials reviewed the sequence of play and found no offside infringement before the incident that resulted in the penalty award.
VAR remained fully operational
FIFA was keen to emphasise that the malfunction affected only the display component of the technology and not the underlying systems used by match officials.
According to the governing body, VAR officials had access to all necessary information during the review process and were able to assess the incident in accordance with standard procedures.
The clarification was issued to address concerns that emerged after the match and to reassure teams and supporters that the decision had been properly examined.
Embolo penalty gave Switzerland the lead
On the pitch, Switzerland capitalised on the opportunity after the penalty was awarded.
Breel Embolo converted from the spot in the 17th minute to put the Swiss side ahead and give them an early advantage in the contest.
The goal appeared set to deliver all three points for Switzerland as the match entered its closing stages.
Qatar rescue late point in dramatic finish
Qatar, however, continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and eventually found a breakthrough deep into added time.
The hosts levelled the score in the 90+4th minute when a header from Boualem Khoukhi was diverted into his own net by Swiss defender Miro Muheim.
The late goal ensured the match ended 1-1, allowing Qatar to secure a valuable point from their opening Group B fixture.
While the result ultimately shared the points between the two teams, much of the post-match discussion centred on the penalty incident and the temporary failure of the semi-automated offside display system.
FIFA’s statement was intended to bring clarity to the situation, reaffirming that the technology issue did not affect the integrity of the decision-making process and that no offside offence was detected before Switzerland’s penalty was awarded.
