FIFA accepts Ibrahim Gusau-led mass resignations as Nigeria begins football reforms

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has accepted the mass resignations that swept through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) last week, clearing the way for the country to proceed with a major overhaul of its football administration.

The NFF confirmed the development after a Nigerian delegation met with FIFA officials to address concerns surrounding the leadership changes and the future direction of Nigerian football.

The mass exit followed mounting pressure over the repeated failures of Nigeria’s national teams, culminating in the resignation of NFF president Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi.

The entire NFF executive committee also stepped down, while heads of various league bodies were removed as the country witnessed an unprecedented clean sweep of its football leadership.

FIFA sanction fears dismissed

The leadership upheaval had immediately raised concerns over a possible FIFA intervention, with reports suggesting that the changes could violate the principle of football independence and potentially expose Nigeria to sanctions.

Those fears were further fuelled by a purported letter allegedly issued by FIFA, which circulated widely in sections of the Nigerian media.

However, the NFF has now categorically dismissed the document as fake following its engagement with FIFA.

“@thenff has debunked news of a “letter” circulating in sections of the media as being from world-football governing body, FIFA. It is totally fake.”

The clarification came after a Nigerian delegation travelled to meet with the world governing body and provide clarity on the sweeping changes taking place within the federation.

The delegation was led by National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko and included NFF administrator Emmanuel Ikpeme, NSC director general Bukola Olopade and former NFF president Amaju Pinnick.

Reforms to continue under interim administration

With Gusau and the executive committee members no longer in office, Ikpeme has assumed responsibility as the federation’s interim general secretary as the authorities work towards establishing a new administrative structure.

Rather than rejecting the changes, FIFA has acknowledged the resignations while discussions continue between the relevant football authorities over the proposed reforms.

The NFF said the parties had reached a mutual understanding to ensure the restructuring process is completed within the framework of existing football regulations.

“FIFA has already accepted the resignations of former principal officers and Members of the NFF Exco, and mutual engagement between the NSC, NFF administration, CAF is ongoing with FIFA on the comprehensive reforms of Nigerian football, including agreeing a road map going forward in accordance to the relevant rules books and statutes.”

The statement provides a significant boost to Nigeria’s reform process, effectively removing immediate fears that FIFA could suspend the country over the leadership changes.

Nigeria seeks new direction

The crisis has placed the administration of Nigerian football under intense scrutiny after a string of disappointing results involving the country’s national teams.

The decision to overhaul the leadership structure represents the most significant administrative shake-up in Nigerian football in recent years and is expected to pave the way for changes across the federation.

With FIFA now engaged in discussions with the NFF administration, the NSC and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), attention will turn to the roadmap for implementing the reforms.

The priority will be to establish a structure that satisfies Nigeria’s football authorities while remaining compliant with FIFA and CAF statutes.
