Fez Grand Stadium begins 1.52bn dirham rehabilitation phase ahead of 2030 World Cup
The Grand Stadium of Fez is set to enter a new phase of rehabilitation after two international contracts worth a combined 1.52 billion dirhams were launched as part of efforts to upgrade the sports complex ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
The projects, launched by the National Agency for Public Facilities, are aimed at modernising the facility’s technical infrastructure and bringing it in line with international standards for major sporting events.
Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, with preparations continuing across the country’s stadium infrastructure.
Major investment in stadium infrastructure
The first contract, covering high and low current systems, is valued at approximately 1.29 billion dirhams.
It includes the installation of specialised lighting, fire detection and automatic fire extinguishing systems, information and communication networks, access control systems, electronic screens, sound and television broadcasting equipment, surveillance cameras and central technical management systems.
The second contract, worth more than 228 million dirhams, covers liquid equipment and systems, including sanitary plumbing, fire protection, air conditioning, ventilation and smoke extraction.
Together, the two contracts represent an investment of around 1.52 billion dirhams in this phase of the rehabilitation programme.
Works to take up to 18 months
The first contract is scheduled to run for 18 months, while the second has a 15-month implementation period. Both deadlines will begin from the date work officially starts.
A 24-month warranty period will apply after provisional acceptance of the works.
The projects are expected to significantly strengthen the stadium’s operational infrastructure, particularly in areas such as safety, crowd management, communications, broadcasting and climate control.
Wider rehabilitation programme
The two contracts form part of a broader programme to rehabilitate the Fes sports complex.
The programmed cost of the wider project for 2026 is estimated at about 2.79 billion dirhams, with the National Agency for Public Facilities acting as the delegated project owner and Sonarges responsible for the project management.
The programme is being supported by the study and architectural offices involved in the project.
The latest contracts therefore represent another stage in the transformation of the complex, which is being prepared not only to host football matches but also to meet the wider technical and operational requirements of major international sporting events.
With the 2030 World Cup approaching, the rehabilitation of the Grand Stadium of Fez is expected to play an important role in strengthening the city’s sporting infrastructure and ensuring the venue can meet international standards.
