New Manchester City signing Rayan Cherki has hit back at his critics, saying he’s more focused than ever after completing a high-profile switch from Lyon.
The 20-year-old, who has Algerian roots, addressed what he called “unfounded criticism” in the French press following his rise to prominence this past season.
He joins the Premier League club on the back of a breakout year and is eligible to feature at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking to Téléfoot, Cherki reflected on the personal growth behind his standout campaign.
“I think I played the best season of my career. I managed to get people talking only about the positive things: my passes, my dribbling…
“I don’t hear many people talking about the unfounded criticism I received. Few players would have kept their cool and reacted.”
Cherki registered 12 goals and 20 assists in 44 appearances for Lyon, earning the Ligue 1 Best Dribbler award.
He attributed his style to his upbringing, influenced by family and a love for the game’s artistry.
“My football is a bit more old-fashioned thanks to my father and my brothers,” he said. “Today’s football is less beautiful to watch… there are fewer risks.”
The creative midfielder also believes he’s grown tactically and mentally, adding, “I’m satisfied with my season, even if I can do 18 times better. Today my only desire is to be on the pitch… I think I’ve taken a step forward from all points of view: efficiency, defensive work, commitment without the ball.”
Cherki’s move to City is seen as a major step forward in his career, with expectations high as he begins a new chapter under Pep Guardiola.
