Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly keeping close tabs on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with both clubs showing interest in the 24-year-old following his resurgence this season.
Nmecha, who joined Dortmund from VfL Wolfsburg for €30m in the summer of 2023, faced a challenging debut season due to a hip injury that limited him to just ten Bundesliga starts.
However, under new manager Nuri Sahin, the Germany international has rediscovered his form, playing a deeper role in midfield and impressing with his performances.
After a difficult start to life in Dortmund, Nmecha has started to showcase the talent that once saw him compared to Jude Bellingham for his ability to score goals from deep.
This season, Nmecha has already contributed two goals and one assist in just seven starts, a return that has not gone unnoticed by several top Premier League clubs.
BILD reports that scouts from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle United were in attendance to watch Nmecha during his performance against Bayern Munich, a match that ended in a tense 1-1 draw.
His display against the Bundesliga giants has only heightened interest from these elite clubs.
Adding to Nmecha’s appeal is his status as a homegrown talent.
The midfielder and his brother Lukas both rose through the ranks at Manchester City’s academy before Felix made three appearances for the senior team in 2021.
After leaving City, Nmecha moved to Wolfsburg, where his performances in the 2022/23 season garnered significant attention, ultimately leading to his move to Dortmund.
Dortmund’s decision to shift Nmecha from an attacking midfielder to a more defensive box-to-box role appears to have paid off.
Sporting director Lars Ricken praised Nmecha’s rapid adaptation to the deeper role, stating, “We had in mind that he could become a number six one day.
He has now taken these steps quickly under Nuri.
He got his chance and then took it.
In his form, with his size, his speed, he is a difference maker!”
Nmecha’s progress this season has certainly caught the eye of top European clubs, and with his versatility, physicality, and improving form, he looks set to be a key player for Dortmund and potentially a target for some of the Premier League’s most ambitious teams.
