Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has signaled his intention to switch his international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria, a move that could bolster the Super Eagles’ defensive options.
Agu Eager to wear Nigerian colours
Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Agu, 25, remains eligible to play for Nigeria despite having previously represented Germany at the Under-21 level.
His decision to consider the switch aligns with his deep-rooted connection to his Nigerian heritage.
“Playing at the national level has always been a dream of mine.
I already had to make half the decision by playing for the German U21 team,” Agu told Oma Sports.
He also revealed discussions with fellow player Justin Njinmah about their mutual desire to represent Nigeria.
It would be like a dream come true and would bring a smile to our fathers,” he said.
Club career and recent form
Agu began his professional journey with VfL Osnabrück before making a move to Werder Bremen in 2020.
This season, he has been a key player for the Bundesliga side, contributing two goals in 14 league appearances.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with many Nigerian football fans welcoming his willingness to commit to the Super Eagles.
If the switch is completed, Agu could provide additional depth to Nigeria’s defensive setup as they prepare for crucial international fixtures.
A crucial decision ahead
While Agu has expressed his desire to play for Nigeria, an official change of allegiance would require FIFA approval.
The Nigerian Football Federation is yet to make a formal announcement regarding his potential inclusion in the national squad.
For now, Agu remains focused on his club commitments with Werder Bremen, but his future on the international stage could soon take a different direction.
Nigerian supporters will be eager to see whether he can make an impact for the Super Eagles in the years to come.
