Ameer Hussein, the vice president of the Egyptian Football Federation, has justified his statements regarding the disparity in the number of matches played by Al Ahly, citing the club’s external engagements as a contributing factor.
Speaking in a recent interview, Hussein humorously remarked, “Al Ahly played only 7 matches in the league because they are the most favored club.
We’ve previously stated that if anyone has a schedule plan, they are welcome to present it, and we will be grateful for it.”
Explaining further on ETC channel, he questioned, “Was there any opportunity for Al Ahly to play any league match that they missed? On the contrary, Al Ahly participated in the CAF Super Cup, the CAF Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the local Super Cup, while the Egyptian Football Federation did not.”
Hussein disclosed ongoing discussions, stating, “I had discussions with Ahmed Diab three years ago regarding the proposal for a new league system after the establishment of the Clubs Association, but the clubs rejected it.”
Regarding uncertainties surrounding the timing of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Hussein expressed concern, suggesting potential clashes with the league calendar.
He emphasized the need for strategic planning considering various tournaments.
Responding to queries about Al Ahly’s position, Hussein remarked, “I was surprised by reports suggesting that Al Ahly would advance to the title competition stage in the new league system based on their points.
This practice already exists in the Premier League, so what’s the issue?”
Regarding potential adjustments to the league structure, Hussein proposed a format ensuring each team plays regularly, minimizing gaps in fixtures.
Concluding his statements, Hussein highlighted logistical improvements, suggesting match venues be determined by a draw, emphasizing fairness.
He concluded, “If there were no Africa Cup of Nations this season, we could have utilized the 45-day window to host approximately 13 rounds.”
