FC Rouen have completed the signing of Senegalese defender Formose Mendy from Nîmes Olympique, marking their first major addition ahead of the upcoming National League campaign.
Mendy, who captained Nîmes during the 2023–24 season, brings a wealth of experience to the Normandy-based club.
The 31-year-old centre-back featured in 27 matches last season in the National division and will now reunite with his former manager at Red Star, Régis Brouard, who currently leads FC Rouen.
The move signals a strong statement of intent from Rouen, who are looking to strengthen their defensive line with proven, battle-hardened talent. Mendy, who has played 164 matches in the Championnat National over the course of his career, is expected to play a pivotal role both on and off the pitch as the club aims to compete at the top end of the table.
“Our new rock already has 164 National matches and will bring his experience and leadership to our team,” FC Rouen said in an official statement announcing the signing. “Solid in duels and good in the air, our new number 22 is also a skilled passer.”
Mendy joined Nîmes in 2023 and quickly established himself as a central figure in their back line. Despite the club’s struggles, his performances stood out for their consistency and authority.
His leadership qualities were recognised by his appointment as team captain during his single season in the Gard region.
This transfer also marks a professional reunion with Régis Brouard, under whom Mendy previously played at Red Star. Their past working relationship could prove key in facilitating a smooth transition, both tactically and personally, as Mendy integrates into his new squad at Rouen.
The club had already begun laying the foundation for the new season with a series of contract renewals and the announcement of its first professional signing from within.
Mendy’s arrival is their first external reinforcement of the summer, suggesting that Rouen are prioritising experience and defensive solidity as they shape their squad for the coming campaign.
Known for his aerial dominance and physical strength, Mendy is also respected for his calmness in possession and his ability to organise the defensive line.
These attributes are expected to complement the younger players in Rouen’s squad and provide much-needed structure in high-pressure situations.
His addition is also likely to bring greater competition and depth to the back line, which will be crucial as the long and demanding National season unfolds.
The league has become increasingly competitive in recent years, and clubs like Rouen are bolstering their squads with seasoned professionals to improve their promotion prospects.
With preparations for the new season underway, Mendy’s signing adds a reassuring layer of experience and maturity to Rouen’s defensive setup.
The club and supporters alike will hope that his presence will contribute significantly to a successful campaign as they look to climb the French football pyramid.
