FC Rapid 1923 sign Gambia-Norway defender Sheriff Sinyan

Gambia-Norway defender Sheriff Sinyan has joined Romanian club FC Rapid 1923 as a free agent, completing his move after leaving CFR Cluj.

The 30-year-old centre-back switched to Rapid on 4 September 2026, beginning a new chapter in Romania’s SuperLiga. Sinyan had been without a club since departing CFR Cluj on 1 July, having spent the second half of the 2024-25 season with the Romanian side.

Sinyan joined CFR Cluj from Norwegian club Odd in January 2025. His move to Odd in August 2024 came after leaving Czech club Slavia Prague, also as a free agent. He had joined Slavia from Norwegian side Molde in July 2023.

The defender brings experience from domestic football in Norway, Romania and the Czech Republic, as well as European competition. He has made 26 appearances in the SuperLiga and a further 12 in the championship group, scoring once in the latter competition. His record also includes appearances in the Romanian Cup, Romanian Super Cup, Europa League and European qualifying matches.

Sinyan has featured seven times in the Europa League and scored twice across four Europa League qualifying appearances. He also played in Champions League qualifying and the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds during his career.

Born in Oslo, Sinyan developed in Norway and made his senior breakthrough with Lillestrøm. He progressed from Lillestrøm’s youth system to the club’s second team before moving into the first-team squad. In June 2020, he joined Molde from Lillestrøm for €500,000.

During his time with Molde, Sinyan won the Norwegian Cup in 2021 and 2023. He also collected a Romanian Cup winner’s medal with CFR Cluj in the 2024-25 campaign.

Standing 1.88m tall and favouring his right foot, Sinyan has played primarily as a central defender. His career record in Norway’s Eliteserien includes 87 appearances, five goals and two assists.

FC Rapid 1923 have now added Sinyan to their squad following his departure from CFR Cluj and completed the free-agent move on 4 September 2026.
