OM’s Interest in Papy Djilobodji Stalled as Nantes Vows to Keep Defender
Olympique de Marseille’s pursuit of Senegalese central defender Papy Djilobodji has hit a significant roadblock, with FC Nantes firmly stating their intention to retain the player amid the club’s current recruitment restrictions.
Nantes president Waldemar Kita addressed the situation in an interview with local daily Presse-Océan, making it clear that the club has no plans to sell Djilobodji, despite reported interest from OM. “We have no intention of parting with him,” Kita said. “There are no offers for him, and we need him in our squad.”
The 24-year-old defender was a key figure in Nantes’ starting eleven last season, delivering consistent performances that caught the attention of several clubs, including Marseille. However, with Nantes currently under a transfer ban, the club faces limitations that prevent them from replenishing the squad if key players depart.
Kita also commented on potential pressure tactics from the player to force a move but remained confident that Djilobodji would commit fully to the club’s ambitions. “Even if he risks putting pressure on, he will have to confirm his very good season,” he said. Kita added a pointed comparison, hoping the player would avoid repeating the example of former Nantes striker Filip Djordjevic, who left under less-than-ideal circumstances.
OM, meanwhile, has reportedly ruled out signing any player who would likely be involved in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (CAN), reflecting concerns about squad stability during the continental tournament period. This policy further diminishes the possibility of securing Djilobodji’s signature, given his participation with the Senegalese national team.
With Nantes barred from registering new players and determined to hold on to vital members of their squad, the prospects of a transfer involving Djilobodji appear slim for the immediate future. OM will need to explore alternative options as they prepare for the season ahead.
