FC Barcelona set their sights on Dion Lopy from Almería. Despite their earnest attempts, the financial constraints plaguing the Catalan club prevented the fruition of this potential acquisition.
Unveiling limited activity in the winter transfer market, FC Barcelona’s sole addition was the acquisition of the promising 18-year-old Brazilian striker, Vitor Roque, from Athletico Paranaense.
However, the current occupants of the fourth position in LaLiga faced challenges not only in the offensive sector but also in midfield, intensified by Gavi’s season-ending injury and the underwhelming performances of Oriol Romeu.
In their bid to reinforce the midfield, Barcelona explored various avenues, including pursuits of players like Kalvin Philipps, who ultimately joined West Ham from Manchester City.
Another prospect on their radar was Dion Lopy, a Senegalese international, and they initiated discussions with UD Almería regarding his potential transfer.
Reports from Mundo Deportivo reveal that Barcelona engaged in talks with UD Almería management to bring Dion Lopy to Catalonia during the winter transfer window. However, these discussions reached an impasse, and the pursuit of Lopy faded away swiftly.
The financial difficulties looming large over Barcelona proved to be the stumbling block, preventing them from progressing with the signing of the player, who hails from the Oslo FA Academy in Dakar.
While the specifics of Barcelona’s proposed offer remain undisclosed, Almería had previously demonstrated a steadfast stance against selling the 22-year-old midfielder during the winter transfer window.
Eintracht Frankfurt had reportedly faced rejection for a €15 million bid earlier. Dion Lopy, a €6.5 million acquisition for Almería last summer, has emerged as one of the few bright spots in a challenging season for the Andalusian side, currently grappling with a winless streak in the Championship and looming relegation.
