Spanish football powerhouse FC Barcelona have called off their proposed friendly match in Casablanca, Morocco, originally slated for August 7.
The fixture was scheduled to take place shortly after the club’s preseason tour of Asia and before their annual Joan Gamper Trophy match, as earlier reported by AfricaSoccer.com.
However, Spanish media now indicate that the Casablanca game has been postponed, following a decision made jointly by head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco.
The pair reportedly advised against the match in order to prioritize optimal preparation for the upcoming La Liga season.
Their concerns stem from the team’s intense preseason schedule, which includes a demanding two-week tour in Asia with matches in Japan and South Korea.
Barcelona will play three friendlies during the tour and are expected to earn around €10 million from the games.
The squad is set to return to Barcelona on August 5, just two days before the planned match in Casablanca.
The coaching staff deemed it impractical to squeeze in another game before the Joan Gamper Trophy on August 10 at the Spotify Camp Nou, especially with the league season set to commence shortly afterward.
The decision to cancel was reportedly agreed upon by both involved parties and later communicated to club president Joan Laporta, who supported the move.
While the Casablanca fixture is off the calendar for now, it remains a possibility for a future date.
