Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has moved to quash speculation over the future of midfielder Carlos Baleba, insisting he is ‘fantastically confident’ the 21-year-old will remain at the club despite reported interest from Manchester United.
United are still in the market for midfield reinforcements ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline, with manager Ruben Amorim keen to strengthen his options after a turbulent start to the season.
Baleba has been repeatedly mentioned as a potential target, but Brighton’s stance has been firm, with reports suggesting the south coast club value him at over £100 million – a figure that has discouraged serious negotiations.
Addressing the situation in his pre-match press conference before Sunday’s Premier League clash against champions Manchester City, Hurzeler brushed off suggestions that the player could leave the Amex Stadium this summer.
On Baleba, the German coach said: “If there is a number more than 100 per cent, I would say more than 100, so fantastically confident.”
Baleba has quickly established himself as one of Brighton’s most influential players since joining from Lille last year, impressing with his energy, athleticism and ability to dictate play from midfield.
His performances have drawn attention from across Europe, but Brighton remain adamant they will not sell a key asset in the final days of the window unless an extraordinary offer is made.
For Hurzeler, keeping hold of Baleba is central to Brighton’s ambitions of building on recent success.
The Seagulls, who finished in the top half last season and continue to push for European qualification, see the Cameroon-born midfielder as a cornerstone for their long-term project.
