Fabrice Ondoa reflects on Rigobert Song’s departure from Cameroon

Cameroonian goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa has expressed his regret over the departure of Rigobert Song as head coach of the national team following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking during an appearance on the program Les Zeglisiens, Ondoa shared his belief that Song still had more to contribute to the Indomitable Lions.

“I think that Rigobert Song could still have brought something to this team,” Ondoa said, in remarks reported by Afrik-foot.

He emphasized the significant role Song played in his personal and professional journey with the national team.

Under Song’s leadership, Ondoa experienced a resurgence in his career, reclaiming his position as the team’s starting goalkeeper.

Reflecting on this decision, the 27-year-old acknowledged its positive impact, suggesting that Song’s faith in him was instrumental in revitalizing his confidence and form.

However, Ondoa’s sentiments are not universally shared. Many observers and critics argue that the end of Song’s tenure was inevitable following Cameroon’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON.

The team fell short of expectations, prompting calls for change within the national setup.

Despite these contrasting views, Ondoa’s comments highlight the lasting influence Rigobert Song had on the Cameroonian squad.

As a former Indomitable Lions defender and a figure deeply rooted in the nation’s football history, Song’s contributions to the team extended beyond the technical aspects of coaching, resonating on a personal level with players like Ondoa.

Rigobert Song’s departure marks the end of a chapter in Cameroon’s football story, but for players such as Ondoa, his legacy remains significant.

Whether his absence proves to be a turning point for the team or a missed opportunity will be determined in the years to come.
