Ex-Maritzburg United winger Gabriel Nyoni reveals father celebrated career-ending injury
Former Maritzburg United midfielder Gabriel Nyoni has made a startling revelation, claiming that his own father celebrated his career downturn following a serious injury.
Nyoni suffered a Lisfranc fracture during a league clash against Richards Bay FC in February 2021 while playing for Cape Umoya in South Africa’s National First Division.
The injury required major surgery, including the insertion of two wires and three screws into his right leg.
Though Nyoni worked hard to recover, the setback ultimately prevented him from returning to peak physical condition, forcing an early retirement from professional football.
Speaking to Zimbabwean outlet Nehanda Radio, Nyoni made the shocking claim about his father’s reaction:
“When I was injured, my father celebrated my downfall. My fans whispered hope, telling me I still had a chance. God confirmed it: you still can. And today, every drop of sweat proves I truly can.
He added that his journey extends beyond football: “My journey is not just about football — it’s about resilience, about refusing to let pain define me. If you’re reading this, let my story remind you: no one has the final say over your life except God. See you next year, stronger than ever.”
Nyoni’s candid reflections underscore a story of perseverance and determination, highlighting the emotional and physical challenges athletes face when confronting career-altering injuries.
