Everton forward Martin Sherif faces FA action over alleged betting activity

Everton forward Martin Sherif has been charged by the Football Association over 61 alleged breaches of its betting regulations.

The 20-year-old is accused of placing bets on football matches on 61 separate occasions during a 15-month period between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.

The FA said Sherif had been charged with a breach of Rule E1.2 of its regulations, which prohibits players from betting directly or indirectly on football matches.

Sherif has until Monday, 17 August to respond formally to the allegations. The case will then be referred to an independent disciplinary commission, which will determine any potential punishment.

The FA’s announcement was reported by Reuters. No decision has yet been made on the outcome of the case, and the charge remains an allegation until the disciplinary process is completed.

Sherif was born in Liberia and developed through Everton’s academy, having joined the club in 2019. He began training with the first team at the start of 2025 but has not made a competitive Premier League appearance for Everton.

The forward spent last season on loan at two clubs. His first temporary move was to Rotherham United in League One, where he scored twice in 10 appearances.

He was recalled by Everton in December because of injuries before moving to Port Vale from February. Sherif scored two goals in 17 matches during his spell with Port Vale, who were relegated to the second tier.

The allegations concern football betting during the period in which Sherif remained an Everton player and also included his loan spells, although the FA announcement did not provide details of the individual bets or the matches involved.

Under the process outlined by the governing body, Sherif’s written response will be considered before the matter is passed to the independent commission. That panel will be responsible for deciding whether a breach has been established and, if so, what sanction should be imposed.

The possible outcome has not been specified. The FA’s charge relates to the alleged betting activity itself and does not represent a final finding against the player.

Sherif’s development at Everton has included first-team training and two loan spells, but he has yet to make his senior league debut for the club. His most recent competitive action came during Port Vale’s campaign, which ended with relegation to the second tier.
