Spanish side Atletico Madrid has entered the race to sign Nigerian-born defender Honest Ahanor, joining Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Newcastle, as the 18-year-old emerges as one of Europe’s most promising young centre-backs.

Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that the La Liga side has intensified their interest in the Atalanta defender as they seek to bolster their defensive options. “Atlético de Madrid have stepped up their monitoring of Honest Ahanor, the promising Nigerian defender currently playing for Atalanta,” the outlet noted.

Ahanor has impressed since moving from Genoa to Atalanta last summer, quickly establishing himself as one of Serie A’s top young talents. This season, he has logged nearly 1,500 minutes in 24 appearances across all competitions, including the UEFA Champions League.

Premier League clubs are closely following his development. Scouts from Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest have reportedly been sent to track his performances and compile detailed reports. United’s interest comes amid uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s future, while Newcastle and Tottenham are exploring defensive options amid questions over Fabian Schär, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven.

Fichajes indicates that Ahanor’s contract with Atalanta includes a release clause estimated between €50m and €65m, setting the stage for a potentially intense transfer battle. Atletico see defensive reinforcements as a priority, especially given the uncertain future of José María Giménez. The club’s technical team believes Ahanor could become a long-term cornerstone, with manager Diego Simeone reportedly valuing his anticipation and strength in duels.

Off the pitch, Ahanor has made a key international decision. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he was previously registered as Nigerian due to immigration rules. Having turned 18 this week, he is now eligible to represent Italy at the senior level and is expected to switch his registration accordingly.
