Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has credited the Europa League for helping his side sharpen various aspects of their game this season.
The 19-year-old, who has Ivorian roots, delivered a standout performance as United cruised to a 4-1 win over Athletic Club, securing a 7-1 aggregate victory to reach the final.
Yoro, who provided the assist for Mason Mount’s crucial equaliser, played a pivotal role in United’s second-half surge, which saw them score three goals in the final 20 minutes.
Despite the impressive European run, United’s domestic form has been disappointing, with the team on course for its worst-ever Premier League finish.
Reflecting on the mixed campaign, Yoro admitted that the Europa League has been a critical learning ground for the squad. “We know the job’s not finished, so we try to stay focused, but we need to enjoy this night because we won,” he said.
When asked about the team’s contrasting form in Europe and the Premier League, he added, “Honestly, I cannot tell you. We do well in the Europa League, but we’re not the best in the league, so we need to work out what’s wrong. I think this competition has helped us improve on some things.”
Yoro also stressed the importance of qualifying for the Champions League, which United can secure by winning the Europa League.
“It means a lot for us to play in Europe next season, in the Champions League, the best competition in the world. We need to play in that competition, and we need to win this trophy,” he said.
United will face Tottenham in the final.
